October 9, 2014 Mission Possible with the Los Angeles Police Department and the Autism Society of Los Angeles
Mission Possible is a wonderful safety experience for police officers, deputies, and the autism community. Officers Experience Autism,™ trying hands-on activities designed by BE SAFE creator Emily Iland. The simulations help officers understand different features of autism. Next, 100 local students arrive and each officer is paired with a student. After having some time to know one another, the pairs visit four interactive Safety Stations to explore essential skills like asking for help and following instructions. Both officers and students are enthusiastic about these activities, from BE SAFE Teaching Edition.
Chief Charlie Beck told the Mission Possible audience that the program is a valuable way to bring the two groups together to learn more about each other. “This is an excellent way to break down barriers,” Beck said.
Because Mission Possible is a huge event and not easy to replicate, BE SAFE creator Emily Iland offers other trainings that are easy to host.
